Founded in 1948, the World Health Organization is the United Nations agency responsible for coordinating the world’s response to health emergencies, including COVID 19. Faced with the challenges posed by the pandemic—such as counterfeit medications, lack of verified COVID-19 data to make informed decisions, and evidence of vaccination—the WHO partnered with various public and private entities to develop blockchain solutions. This presentation introduces the WHO and blockchain distributed ledger technology, identifies the most pressing COVID-related challenges, presents examples of blockchain programs in which the WHO is involved, and concludes with the premise that the practical application of blockchain must be considered by those striving to solve “big” problems.
