Information and Data Governance: Insights and Lessons at a Time of Historic Change

A keynote address by a EU data governance leader, with something for everyone. Dennis delivers a highly topical message to all -- including often-overlooked records managers -- and gives them something to chew on. He proffers the idea that everyone can serve as an information governance champion -- irrespective of their formal levels of authority. Everyone can be seen a subject-matter expert within their organizations, and so they have the impact and credibility to influence priorities and needs. Heed this as a rallying cry to encourage professionals in IG and related disciplines to help to set agendas and priorities, and not only to act on what has been decided by others.

The GDPR changed the way people and businesses think about privacy. With its extraterritorial scope and high noncompliance fines, it forced companies to implement ongoing, operational and privacy-focused initiatives by design into their businesses, changing the way companies interact with customers, employees and vendors. Since its enforcement date, the regulation has been a catalyst for new data protection laws across the globe: including groundbreaking new regulations in California, Brazil, India and others, meaning global businesses will need to reassess their privacy compliance across a growing matrix of regulatory requirements. In this session, we will discuss the current state of the global privacy environment and how companies can build programs that address the overarching requirements of various data protection laws.Understanding the fundamentals of PIAs.

Blockchain at the WHO: Case Study (recorded)
Limited Capacity seats available

Founded in 1948, the World Health Organization is the United Nations agency responsible for coordinating the world’s response to health emergencies, including COVID 19. Faced with the challenges posed by the pandemic—such as counterfeit medications, lack of verified COVID-19 data to make informed decisions, and evidence of vaccination—the WHO partnered with various public and private entities to develop blockchain solutions. This presentation introduces the WHO and blockchain distributed ledger technology, identifies the most pressing COVID-related challenges, presents examples of blockchain programs in which the WHO is involved, and concludes with the premise that the practical application of blockchain must be considered by those striving to solve “big” problems.

Artificial Intelligence: Providing Solutions in the FOIA World
Limited Capacity seats available

eDiscovery has greatly been enhanced with the numerous benefits of Artificial Intelligence such as decreased review times and more targeted approaches to finding responsive content. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows citizens to request documents and data from the Government. With the rise of information, FOIA professionals need the tools and resources to work in an efficient and accurate manner. As we have seen in litigation and regulatory investigations, AI will also provide solutions for Government professionals to efficiently and accurately manage FOIAs that each agency receives as well as to reduce the backlog of requests received. These job enhancing features will empower the FOIA professional to handle and manage the information explosion.

Why You Should Consider Non-Invasive Data Governance: Benefits and Caveats

Governing data and information can be a complex task. Guiding leadership past the “why” to the “how” question is an important early step. The term governance sounds difficult, and many organizations are looking for simpler narratives and solutions for governance. This session will present an alternative approach to command-and-control data governance that will simplify-the-complex and set you on your way to implementing a successful program.
Join Bob Seiner, author of Non-Invasive Data Governance: The Path of Least Resistance and Greatest Success (Technics Publications, 2014), for a lively session focused on the advantages and cautions associated with adopting a non-invasive approach to data governance. You may be surprised at how simple it is.
In this session, Bob will share:
  • Three distinct approaches to Data Governance
  • What it means to be non-invasive in your approach
  • Messages to share (and not share) with management
  • Formalizing accountability for data management
  • Benefits and caveats of the non-invasive approach

Trying Not to Gorge at the Buffet: Consuming Microsoft 365 Tools Wisely for Effective IG
Limited Capacity seats available

Businesses have become increasingly dependent on the Microsoft 365 platform to facilitate communication, creation, and collaboration within remote worker populations. As Microsoft adds more features in anticipation of end user needs, it can be difficult to understand how to use new capabilities to further information governance objectives.
As IG professionals, we have to continuously refresh our working knowledge of established M365 native tools – classifiers, policies, and labels – to ensure the uniform management of data stored in our corporate M365 clouds. Unless we work with IT to automate data management all the way through disposition, everyone is at risk of being enticed by too many M365 options and then weighted down by our own information.

Breaking Down Information Silos with IG Metrics & Transparency
Limited Capacity seats available

Effective Information Governance (IG) requires a coordinated and interdisciplinary approach that can optimize the value of information while mitigating the associated risks. A true enterprise-wide IG program would be not restricted to just information lifecycle management but will also cover security, privacy, and overall governance. Enhanced collaboration with all these stakeholders is critical for IG programs to be successful.

Cross-functional programs are particularly challenging to manage. It is often difficult to get alignment across all stakeholders and to clearly define accountability. Stakeholders need to understand exactly what each function is responsible for and how their efforts tie to the strategic priorities of the organization. This session will cover data-driven approaches and strategies for breaking down the silos within IG programs and improving cross-functional alignment and transparency within organizations.
