Change, very few words can inspire equal parts fear and excitement. Technology allows for faster, more profound and wider reaching change and this can power organizations to new heights or mire them in paralysis like never before. I have been fortunate to experience dramatic change, both in terms of speed and impact, throughout my career. I entered the litigation industry, after some time spent in Record Management, when digitization of paper documents was just starting to replace boxes of binders. From there came the need to understand and cope with the transition to digital records and communication. The subsequent data explosion meant that systems and tools needed to be developed and deployed to stay ahead of the wave. This led to larger and larger deployments of cutting edge technology including the move from a closet server room to data centres, effective and efficient storage of Petabytes of data, the movement of workloads to the public cloud, the heavy use of machine learning and the management of the teams responsible. The insight and experience of dealing with data that is not optimally stored, maintained and tracked has proven invaluable in my growth and knowledge of systems and design. The requirements of a pressure filled industry has forced a pragmatic approach to the deployment of technology and the changes that result. Transition and improvement starts with good design and proper change management and the pace and enormity of change over this period has honed my ability to manage the change with a focus on the people and process involved. I look forward to continued growth and change to the storage, use and access to data, the tools and technology that improve and the people and process that it ultimately impacts.
